With the update, Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited members can now read their borrowed titles inside the new ComiXology app. For starters, there’s already an existing Kindle Unlimited that also offers comics (one would be forgiven for thinking that Amazon is competing with itself). Digital comics were probably one of the few works of media that readers were consuming in the browser on on desktop, and maintaining that UX is probably far more costly and not as great for ROI as just compelling people to read on mobile devices or tablets.Amazon also integrated its existing services to ComiXology, which made lines blurry. Lastly, I do not think it bodes well for the web reader () it wouldn't do to have people read on the browser when they can (and for Amazon's purposes should) purchase an e-reader or tablet (preferably one of their own). They might also make a big marketing publicity push to tout the triumph of the new comics store over the old ("Comixology?! What comixology?") Although comixology dominated the digital comics readership market, that market, as many have noted, is probably a rounding error in terms of profit. I think it could probably be done by year's end or sooner than ten years especially given how collective memory/attention span fades quickly and how niche the digital comics and general markets are. I am wondering what the time frame of that removal or sunsetting will be. Yeah, I also see the "Kindle Comics" label as a portent of an eventual removal of the Comixology brand (aside from going directly to, how does one get to Kindle Comics from the Amazon home page? I don't see it being openly advertised, or the pathing does not seem clear to me). But with how the set-up is now there is no dedicated space for comics and that is clear by browsing the Kindle Comics store-front and other integrations done. It is a dedicated space for comics like how the LeagueOfComicGeeks is branded and it is clear from the brand that it is a space for comics. Instead of telling them to buy from Comixology, and when they do a search it will direct them to the Kindle website.įor old-timers, it's easy to understand the history of Comixology and how it was bought by Amazon and now directs to Kindle store-front.īut imagine like ten years from now, it seems unnecessary to retain the branding since new people who first-come into the Kindle storefront will see the Comixology branding and it will seem unnecessary since there is no meaning to it which cannot be better expressed by just calling it as Kindle Comics.Īlso, there is already some visual confusion with Kindle Unlimited and Comixology Unlimited terms taking-up space in the UI.įor me, the meaning of Comixology is putting comics first. But even then wouldn't it be more appropriate to still call it as Kindle Comics rather than as Comixology? Given the deep integration it has with the Kindle ecosystem.įor a newcomer to Comics, it would be less confusing I think to just tell that person to buy comics from Kindle Comics and when they do a Google Search, they will find the Kindle Comics storefront. Of course, Kindle Comics might eventually come close to achieving feature parity with the old Comixology experience. Kindle Comics is actually already competitive in features. If Kindle Comics is not compared with Comixology and is just compared with the current competitors like Google Play Books, Marvel Unlimited, DC Unlimited, etc. When everything has been replaced like the people (the former ceo is no longer in-charge), the website design, the back-end technology, the design of the site, the display technology, the URL of the site, can it still be called as Comixology?Ĭomixology was great and I think Kindle Comics is only looking bad in comparison with Comixology. This is also more of a philosophical question like the well-known "Ship of Theseus". The old stand-alone Comixology website is gone Also, the previous pc browsing experience, the previous mobile experience, the full 3-page previews, the deep search features are all gone, as well as other features. Just a thought, at this point, isn't it more appropriate to just brand it as Kindle Comics?
